Crew is the ultimate team sport.  Whether it's racing in an eight-person or four-person boat, the best crews consist of groups of athletes working together to achieve harmony, rhythm, balance, and speed.  Done well, rowing can feel like flying across the surface of the water.  It also serves as a wonderful way to enhance one's personal fitness, as a low-impact sport that requires a combination of strength, speed, endurance, and technical skill.

One of the best things about rowing is that it is a lifetime sport.  Anybody can learn to row, at any age, and can master the basics in a short period of time.  Longtime rowers and coaches, however, will remind you that it can take the rest of one's life to master the remaining skills, meaning that there is always room to improve as an athlete and a person.


About Practices:

Texas A&M Crew prepares for races with a combination of water practices at Lake Bryan and land practices at the Student Recreational Center.  For land workouts, we use rowing machines (ergometers) and also complete strength-training exercises such as freeweights, running stairs, and body circuits.

There are 7 weekly scheduled times for water practices.  Rowers will sign up for practice times using the team's Google document, and coaches will use this sign-up to schedule each rower for 2-4 water practices, total.  This practice schedule will be periodically reviewed and adjusted (about once a month) as upcoming events change and individual schedules change.  Once the schedule is sent out, it should be used to arrange carpools out to the lake.

Practices Include:

Mondays 6:15-7:15 am, 6-8 pm
Wednesdays 6:15-7:15 am, 6-8 pm
Thursdays 6:15-7:15 am, 6-8 pm
Fridays 6:15-7:15 am

There is an all-team land practice every Tuesday from 6:15-7:15 am.  Meet in the front of the Rec for these workouts.

Lastly, there will be one land workout to be completed individually. These workouts are erg-based.  The team has a fleet of 8 Concept2 ergs that are available at different rowers' houses.  Rowers should make arrangements with the erg-holders to complete erg-based workout - see the Google Doc for info about the ergs.  There are also 4 Concept2 ergs at the Student Recreational Center on campus that can be used as well.
